Since 1999, a group of parents and teachers have worked together to develop Steiner Waldorf education in Leeds. We started as a Parent & Toddler group and then became a playgroup, which was based in Headingley. In September 2001 we started a Kindergarten and Parent & Toddler group at Stainbeck Community Hall. Our future aim is to find suitable premises to house both groups permanently. We are a small group, but feel committed to creating an unpressured, unhurried learning environment for our children. Our long-term aim is to maintain the Early Years provision, as well as found a school for 7-14 year olds.

Beechtree Parents: We feel it is essential for the teachers and parents to work together in order to provide the best care for their children. It is vital for us all to make links, so we can have a greater understanding and whole picture of each child and build a healthy school community together. Parents are encouraged to take part and are welcome.

We include parents in our celebrations of festivals, birthdays and other occasions. We may ask them to come in to the group to tell a story about themselves or perhaps share a skill with the children. They are also involved with and contribute to the general maintenance of the Kindergarten, such as washing up or tidying away after a session.

Parents and friends of Beechtree also form the Management Committee of ‘Beechtree Steiner Initiative’, to contribute to the present running and future vision of Beechtree. Management Committee meetings take place monthly, and deal with Administration, Publicity, Fundraising, Finances and Business planning. These are essential for keeping Beechtree alive and well! Please see minutes of meetings and other notices on the Beechtree Noticeboard at Stainbeck Hall to see how you can help out.

Beechtree Steiner Initiative is a non-profit making organisation and became a registered Charity in 2007.

Current plans for new premises and school: Within the next year, we would like Beechtree to have its own dedicated space, with the potential to run additional Kindergarten and Parent & Toddler sessions. From here we would hope to grow into a Steiner School - at present the nearest Steiner School is in York. We are continually on the look-out for new premises – if you have any ideas and can help out, please let us know!

In our Kindergarten the children grow in a secure caring homely environment, surrounded by quality natural toys and materials which allows the children to develop physical and social skills and creative impulses, together with imagination and fantasy which all help to form a foundation for a healthy adult life. We welcome parents and their children between the ages of 0-3. The parents enjoy a crafts activity while the children join in or play. It is a social occasion, with songs, a story, and sharing food together. This provides an opportunity to discuss matters relating to child development as well as meeting new friends (child and adult) and a gentle introduction to the Steiner Kindergarten, its structure and philosophies.
